SCIATICA TREATMENT
Staten Island Non-Surgical Sciatica ReliefSciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve. It can feel like burning, shooting pain, tingling or numbness, and it often gets worse with sitting, bending or coughing. At SICSR we identify what is irritating the nerve, whether a disc, a stiff joint, a tight piriformis muscle or a combination, and treat that source with a non-surgical, movement-based plan.HOW WE TREAT SCIATICA
Spinal Decompression – Gentle traction that reduces pressure on lumbar discs and nerve roots.Chiropractic Care – Restores motion in the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips.Soft Tissue & Manual Therapy – Releases gluteal and piriformis tension that can compress the nerve.Functional Rehabilitation – Directional-preference exercises (McKenzie MDT) and core/hip strengthening.Class IV Laser Therapy – Non-invasive support for pain and inflammation around the irritated nerve.
WHAT CAUSES SCIATICA?
Herniated or bulging lumbar discs pressing on a nerve rootSpinal stenosis or degenerative changes that narrow the space around the nervePiriformis syndrome, where a deep hip muscle irritates the sciatic nerveSacroiliac joint dysfunction and pelvic imbalanceProlonged sitting, heavy lifting or a sudden twisting injury
SCIATICA VS. ORDINARY BACK PAIN
Not every ache that reaches the hip is sciatica. True sciatic nerve irritation usually travels below the knee and may come with numbness, tingling or weakness. Our examination includes nerve tension tests, strength and reflex checks and movement testing to tell the difference. Read more in Sciatica vs. Lower Back Pain.SCIATICA FAQ
How long does sciatica take to heal?
Many cases improve over several weeks with the right combination of treatment and movement. Severe or long-standing nerve irritation can take longer, and we re-evaluate progress regularly.Do I need surgery for sciatica?
Most people do not. Conservative care is the recommended first step for the majority of disc-related sciatica. If you develop progressive weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control or severe unrelenting pain, you need urgent medical evaluation. Is spinal decompression the same as traction?
Spinal decompression is a controlled, computerized form of traction that gently cycles tension to reduce disc pressure. Learn more on our spinal decompression page. Can I keep training with sciatica?
Often yes, with modifications. We help athletes and active adults find the movements that calm symptoms and keep the rest of their training going.RELATED CONDITIONS & SERVICES
