HERNIATED DISC TREATMENT

Staten Island Non-Surgical Disc Care
The discs between your vertebrae act as cushions. When the outer wall of a disc weakens, the inner material can bulge or herniate and irritate a nearby nerve, causing back or neck pain and symptoms that travel into the arm or leg.

The good news: most herniated discs improve without surgery. At SICSR, Dr. Robert Minlionica, DC, ATC uses a non-surgical, evidence-based approach to reduce pressure on the disc and nerve while rebuilding the strength that protects your spine.

HOW WE TREAT HERNIATED DISCS

SIGNS OF A DISC PROBLEM

  • Lower back or neck pain that worsens with sitting, bending or coughing
  • Pain, tingling or numbness radiating into the leg (sciatica) or arm
  • Weakness in the foot, leg, hand or arm
  • Pain that eases when walking or lying down and flares after prolonged sitting
  • Stiffness and difficulty straightening up first thing in the morning

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your evaluation includes a detailed history, neurological screening and movement testing to find positions that centralize your symptoms. If you already have an MRI, bring it. If your examination suggests imaging is needed, we will coordinate with your physician. Treatment typically starts the same day and progresses from pain control to strengthening and a return to full activity.

HERNIATED DISC FAQ

Can a herniated disc heal on its own?

Many do improve over time. Research shows the herniated portion of a disc can shrink and symptoms can resolve with conservative care. Treatment helps you stay active and comfortable while that happens.

Is a bulging disc the same as a herniated disc?

A bulge is a broader, milder change in the disc wall. A herniation means inner disc material has pushed through the outer wall. Both can irritate nerves and both are commonly managed without surgery.

Is spinal decompression safe for a herniated disc?

Decompression is a gentle, non-surgical option designed specifically for disc-related conditions. We screen for conditions where it is not appropriate before starting.

When should I consider surgery?

Surgery is usually reserved for progressive weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control or severe pain that has not responded to a reasonable course of conservative care. We will refer you promptly if we see red flags.
