BACK PAIN TREATMENT

Staten Island Back Pain Relief & Rehabilitation
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people in Staten Island come to see us. Whether it started after a workout, a long day at a desk, or for no obvious reason at all, back pain can limit your training, your work and your sleep.

At Staten Island Chiropractic & Sports Rehab (SICSR), Dr. Robert Minlionica, DC, ATC combines chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy and functional rehabilitation to address the cause of your back pain, not just the symptoms.

HOW WE TREAT BACK PAIN

COMMON CAUSES OF BACK PAIN

Most back pain is mechanical, meaning it comes from how the joints, discs, muscles and nerves of the spine are moving and loading. Common contributors we see at our Hylan Blvd clinic include:
  • Muscle strains and ligament sprains from lifting, sports or sudden movements
  • Disc irritation, bulges or herniated discs
  • Joint stiffness in the lumbar spine or sacroiliac (SI) joints
  • Prolonged sitting, poor posture and deconditioning
  • Hip, core or glute weakness that overloads the lower back
  • Nerve irritation that can lead to sciatica

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your first appointment starts with a detailed history and a movement-based examination. We look at how your spine, hips and core move together, test the muscles and nerves that may be involved, and identify the specific motions that reproduce your pain.

From there, we build a personalized plan. Most patients receive hands-on treatment on day one, along with a few targeted exercises to start at home. As your pain settles, the plan shifts toward strength, mobility and the activities you want to return to.

BACK PAIN FAQ

Do I need an X-ray or MRI before I come in?

Usually not. Most back pain can be evaluated with a thorough history and physical examination. If your exam shows signs that imaging is needed, we will tell you and coordinate with your physician.

Is chiropractic care safe for back pain?

Spinal manipulation is a widely used, well-studied treatment for low back pain and is included in major clinical guidelines as a first-line option. Your examination determines which techniques are appropriate for you.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on how long you have had the problem, how irritable it is and your goals. We discuss a realistic plan at your first visit and re-evaluate as you progress.

Should I rest or stay active?

For most mechanical back pain, staying active within tolerable limits helps recovery more than bed rest. We will show you which movements to modify and which to keep doing.

Do you treat athletes with back pain?

Yes. Dr. Minlionica is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and Certified Athletic Trainer with experience from collegiate sports to the NFL. See our sports injury rehabilitation page.
